  18. in Oakland. Under Bechtel's leadership, the family-owned company
  19. managed West Coast shipyards during World War II and cultivated
  20. a lucrative relationship with the Saudi government, laying the
  21. trans-Arabian pipeline from the Persian Gulf to the
  22. Mediterranean.
